Background & Philosophy

What is Cancer in Ayurveda?

Ayurveda understands cancer not as a single disease, but as a profound systemic imbalance — rooted in the disruption of the body's fundamental energies and tissues.

Ayurvedic herbs, spices and traditional medicine
🌱
Classical Term

Arbuda & Granthi

In classical Ayurvedic texts, abnormal tissue growths are classified as Arbuda (malignant tumours) and Granthi (benign growths or cysts). Arbuda is characterized by fast, irregular growth that does not follow the body's normal repair processes — a description closely aligned with modern oncology's understanding of malignancy.

⚖️
Root Cause

Dosha Imbalance

The development of Arbuda is attributed to a severe and chronic imbalance of the three Doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. This corruption disrupts the normal formation and repair of Dhatus (body tissues), eventually leading to pathological cellular changes. Pain is specifically linked to aggravated Vata dosha obstructing the Srotas (body channels).

🔥
Toxic Accumulation

Ama (Toxins)

Ama refers to metabolic waste and undigested material that accumulates in the body due to weakened digestive fire (Agni). This toxic sludge is considered a key factor in the initiation and progression of Arbuda. Ayurvedic treatment therefore places high emphasis on clearing Ama through detoxification and strengthening Agni to restore proper metabolism and immunity.

🔀
Channel Blockage

Srotas (Channels)

Srotas are the body's micro- and macro-channels that carry nutrients, waste, and vital energies throughout the system. Cancer involves a blockage or corruption of these channels by Ama and vitiated Doshas. Clearing the Srotas — through Panchakarma and Rasayana — is central to restoring health and improving the body's response to treatment.

💡

The Ayurvedic Perspective in Summary

Ayurveda views cancer as a systemic failure — not merely a local cellular event. Its treatment, therefore, is never isolated. Every intervention aims to restore the whole person: purifying accumulated toxins, rebalancing the Doshas, nourishing the depleted Dhatus, clearing the Srotas, and rebuilding Agni (digestive and metabolic fire) as the foundation of immunity and healing.
